Sandwich Sudoku is one of the most popular modern Sudoku variants in the world. Instead of arithmetic cages like Killer Sudoku, Sandwich Sudoku gives you numbers placed outside the grid. These outside clues tell you the exact sum of all digits sandwiched between the numbers 1 and 9 in that row or column.

How does Sandwich Sudoku work?

In Sandwich Sudoku, standard 9×9 Sudoku rules apply, but numbers outside the grid show the sum of all digits located strictly between the 1 and the 9 in that row or column. If 1 and 9 are directly adjacent, the clue is 0. If the clue is 35, the 1 and 9 must sit at opposite ends (cells 1 and 9), trapping all other seven digits.

The core rules of Sandwich Sudoku

Every valid Sandwich Sudoku puzzle follows three unchanging constraints:

  1. Standard Sudoku rules: Every row, column, and 3×3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once.
  2. The Crusts (1 and 9): The digits 1 and 9 serve as the "bread" of the sandwich. Neither 1 nor 9 is included in the sum calculation—only the numbers physically placed between them.
  3. Outside Clues: The number outside a row or column represents the sum of the digits between 1 and 9 in that line. If a row has no outside clue, the sum is unspecified, but 1 and 9 must still appear somewhere in that row.

The "Bread-and-Butter" Crust Logic

Before worrying about which numbers are inside the sandwich, expert solvers determine where the 1 and 9 can physically sit. Because the remaining seven digits ($2+3+4+5+6+7+8$) sum to exactly **35**, outside clues immediately restrict the distance between the two crusts.

Unique & extreme sandwich sums table

Certain sandwich sums can only be formed by an exact number of cells. Recognizing these extreme values instantly narrows candidate placements:

Outside Clue Number of Cells Between 1 and 9 Required Digits in the Sandwich Crust Distance (Span)
0 0 cells None (1 and 9 are adjacent) Distance = 1
2 1 cell [2] Distance = 2
3 1 cell [3] Distance = 2
4 1 cell [4] Distance = 2
33 6 cells Missing only [2] (35 - 2 = 33) Distance = 7
34 N/A (Impossible) No single digit equals 1 Impossible
35 7 cells All remaining digits (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) Distance = 8 (Corners)

Notice the mathematical rule: a sum of 34 is impossible because the smallest available middle digit is 2 ($35 - 2 = 33$). If an outside clue is 35, the 1 and 9 must be in the first and last cells of that line (cells 1 and 9).

A worked deduction: the 0-clue and 35-clue interaction

Consider a row with an outside clue of 0 intersecting a column with an outside clue of 35:

  • The column clue of 35 forces the column's 1 and 9 into row 1 and row 9.
  • If our row is row 1, it already contains one of the crusts (either 1 or 9).
  • Because our row has a clue of 0, the other crust in row 1 must be placed directly adjacent to it (in column 2).
  • Instantly, two digits in row 1 and one digit in row 9 are locked without testing any other numbers.

Common mistakes to avoid in Sandwich Sudoku

  • Adding the 1 or 9 into the sum: The crusts define the boundary; they are never part of the arithmetic.
  • Assuming order matters: A clue does not specify whether 1 comes before 9 or 9 comes before 1. Both permutations are equally valid until resolved by box or column constraints.
  • Forgetting row/column overlaps: When 1 and 9 are placed in a 3×3 box, they also satisfy parts of the perpendicular lines passing through that box. Always cross-check the perpendicular outside sums.

Frequently asked questions about Sandwich Sudoku

What does a clue of 0 mean in Sandwich Sudoku?

A clue of 0 means there are zero cells between the 1 and the 9 in that row or column. In other words, the 1 and 9 are directly adjacent neighbours.

Can a sandwich sum be formed by multiple combinations?

Yes. For example, a sum of 5 could be a single cell containing 5, or two cells containing 2 and 3. You must use cross-referencing rows, columns, and 3×3 box constraints to determine the exact span.

What is the maximum possible sandwich sum?

The maximum possible sum is 35. This occurs when all seven non-crust digits ($2+3+4+5+6+7+8$) are trapped between the 1 and the 9, forcing the 1 and 9 into opposite corners of the row or column.

Is guessing ever required in Sandwich Sudoku?

No properly constructed Sandwich Sudoku requires guessing. Every cell can be logically deduced by combining standard Sudoku constraints with the mathematical limits of the outside sums.
